#GuildChat for 07/03/15: Celebrating Our Learning Independence

Our next #GuildChat takes place Friday, July 3rd at 11am PT / 2pm ET. This week we’ll look to Celebrate our Learning Independence!

Here in the United States we are approaching our Independence Day, The 4th of July.  This date marked 2015-01-09_11-14-16the beginning of a fight for independence not the completion of it. Similarly, in Learning, we are seeing more and more of it moving outside the confines of the traditional department, classroom and course model. Learning is happening everywhere and the freedom to choose what, where, and when to learn is growing and challenging traditional structures of power and authority.

This week we look at the revolution underway for individuals, organizations and learning professionals and what growing independence means for each; the opportunities and the challenges.

Prospective questions:

Q1. What freedoms do you seek as a learner? #GuildChat

Q2. How has independence manifested itself in your personal learning? #GuildChat

Q3. In what ways have organizations tried to maintain control? #GuildChat

Q4. Who faces the greatest challenge from increased learner independence, learners? L&D? The organization? Why? #GuildChat

Q5. What approaches, tools or technology has helped you be a more independent learner? #GuildChat

Q6. Has increased learning independence been more a revolutionary change or evolutionary? Why? #GuildChat

Q7. How can we help others become more independent learners?

2:19 PM ChadSLowry Q3) Every time an LMS is implemented, an angel loses its wings. #guildchat
2:19 PM SimonBlairTrain A3: By only recognizing learning that takes place in-house. By controlling the purse strings for external learning. #GuildChat

2:20 PM learningsnacks @McGough3R Even companies that block social media… #GuildChat
2:20 PM Plock2009 A3。not the Org. It’s the risk averse attorneys who force mandatory CYA courses down our throats #GuildChat
2:21 PM ChadSLowry Q3) Orgs that overschedule & don’t consciously allow time for learning among employees should expect to be lapped by competitors. #guildchat
2:21 PM urbie #guildchat brb.. gotta help Mrs thread the weedwhacker.. Freedom apparently means landscaping..
2:21 PM SimonBlairTrain @flipchartguy I should make a course to help people get over that. :-) #GuildChat
2:21 PM JD_Dillon A3) Acting as if learning and performance is a department #GuildChat
2:21 PM learningsnacks A3. Companies that don’t listen to your training needs. #GuildChat
2:22 PM Plock2009 RT @JD_Dillon: A2) Feeling free to call “bullshit” on theories and approaches that just don’t make sense (ex: learning styles) #GuildChat
2:22 PM flipchartguy @SimonBlairTrain May be paradoxical, but could be helpful (esp in mgmt/ldrshp dev programs!). #guildchat
2:22 PM perrinia A3 forcing learning pathways #1 eg lrnr must read this or how will I know they have learned it. Ugh #GuildChat
2:23 PM LaVonnaRoth RT @urbie: #guildchat A2 #EdCamp is major. Joining #TCEA #CUE & the eLearningGuild manifest ownership. Getting up and joining conversations…

2:24 PM ChadSLowry @McGough3R Enjoy! #guildchat
2:25 PM LnDDave RT @eLearningGuild: Q3. In what ways have organizations tried to maintain control? #GuildChat
2:25 PM JD_Dillon A3) Ignoring people’s existing knowledge and skills, refusing to allow open sharing  #guildchat
2:25 PM flipchartguy Because I want the freedom to multitask today, just wanted to let folks know Serena is tied 5-5 in 3rd set #guildchat
2:25 PM urbie #guildchat A3 My last 2 orgs, under great recession economic pressure, have no $ for PD. If their culture doesn’t push ownership, well..
2:26 PM eLearningGuild Q4. Who faces the greatest challenge from increased learner independence, learners? L&D? The organization? Why? #GuildChat
2:26 PM LnDDave A3) thinking that what employees Ned to know is a finite list. #GuildChat
2:26 PM urbie #guildchat A3 Oh.. and this thing with LMSs.. that your training has to be input so the org can use as needed?? What’s up with THAT???
2:26 PM LnDDave RT @eLearningGuild: Q4. Who faces the greatest challenge from increased learner independence, learners? L&D? The organization? Why? #GuildC…
2:26 PM perrinia @DonaldClark #guildchat being able to control our LMS gives us leverage and flexibility. But- it is also a collective.
2:26 PM urbie #guildchat A3 I’m a holistic chap. My projects get all of me. Anyway.. back to the chat..
2:27 PM urbie #guildchat A3 I work with clinicians. They get stipends for PD only it has to be accredited. No accreditation, no stipend, no time off.
2:27 PM LnDDave A4) I think trainers face the greatest challenge, mostly due to the fact that learner independence is a threat to “what is”.  #GuildChat
2:27 PM flipchartguy @urbie Were people able to find own paths without funds (like Tweet chats, book clubs, comms of practice, etc)? #guildchat
2:27 PM perrinia @ChadSLowry I meant #guildchat   #toomanytweetmeets
2:28 PM ChadSLowry Q4) Challenges for all 3: 1) Learners need to think about their own learning & take ownership of it. Great oppty for leadership. #guildchat
2:28 PM JD_Dillon A4) L&D faces imminent extinction without considerable changes #GuildChat  https://t.co/6MDzm9eilD
2:28 PM learningsnacks A4. I think L&D. It’s a great change from how things are done now. #GuildChat
2:28 PM SimonBlairTrain A4: Challenge for learners: own their development (vs relying on L&D). Challenge for L&D: staying relevant/useful. #GuildChat
2:28 PM Greggs_Science A1)Enough content to learn without excessive requirement about order and pace #Guildchat
2:28 PM flipchartguy A4) Supervisors may have biggest challenge to support independent lrng; if they don’t know what’s learned, they can’t support it #guildchat
2:28 PM willconstantine RT @eLearningGuild: Q4. Who faces the greatest challenge from increased learner independence, learners? L&D? The organization? Why? #GuildC…
2:29 PM urbie @flipchartguy Nope. That’s where culture comes in. We (orgs/us) can’t be passive about it. Engage or fall behind, be irrelevant. #guildchat
2:29 PM ChadSLowry Q4) 2: Challenge for L&D is to offer multiple pathways & modalities for learners. Don’t expect everyone to learn just 1 way. #guildchat
2:29 PM urbie @perrinia mmmhhmm #guildchat
2:29 PM LnDDave A4$ depends on the definition of challenge. I know lots of org said that place plenty of barriers to openness.  #GuildChat
2:30 PM Greggs_Science A2) I am better prepared when creative use cases arise #GuildChat
2:30 PM JD_Dillon A4) To echo Dr. Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park, employees and orgs will find a way – w/o formal L&D #GuildChat
2:30 PM ChadSLowry Q4) 3: Challenge for orgs is to enable & allow learner independence by expecting it. Should be part of review process. #guildchat
2:30 PM urbie RT @eLearningGuild: Q4. Who faces the greatest challenge from increased learner independence, learners? L&D? The organization? Why? #GuildC…
2:30 PM willconstantine @ChadSLowry I agree each has their own challenge they are going to encounter. Learners could be overloaded with information #guildchat
2:30 PM perrinia A4 #GuildChat. My money on this one is senior mgmt, esp in hierarchy org. But this has Allowed me to light the revolutn by being under radar
2:31 PM urbie #guildchat A4 Us.
2:31 PM billbollenbach @SimonBlairTrain balance of structure and innovation? Do we intrinsically desire this? #GuildChat
2:31 PM learningsnacks @ChadSLowry Should they be spending the time doing it when they have their own responsibilities? #GuildChat
2:31 PM Greggs_Science A3) When they decide our PD topics based on what they think I need, rather than asking what I think I need #GuildChat
2:32 PM urbie #guildchat A4 15 years ago I did TONS of Flash eLearning work. Nails driven by apps Articulate (awesome tool!) & overseas developers..
2:32 PM perrinia A4. Having it be us is nay so bad.  #GuildChat
2:32 PM DonaldClark A4 #guildchat  all need to adapt & all will gain – dull classroom stuff the long-term loser
2:32 PM SimonBlairTrain @billbollenbach I do, but I’ve seen too many people who refuse to do/learn anything that isn’t specifically mandated. #GuildChat 1/2
2:32 PM learningsnacks @JD_Dillon If we think or ourselves only as course providers, definitely. We need to place ourselves as problem-solvers too. #GuildChat
2:32 PM ChadSLowry @willconstantine Hey, Will! Thanks for the reply. Taking a page from your book & making some homemade tomato paste today. #guildchat
2:33 PM SimonBlairTrain @billbollenbach “Not my job” syndrome is very distressing when applied to personal development. #GuildChat 2/2
2:33 PM Greggs_Science @eLearningGuild  L&D is an unfamiliar acronym to me #GuildChat
2:33 PM urbie #guildchat A4 Implication is if we don’t grow skills we’ll be automated-out. L&D has to grow its options too. #DesignThinking for example..
2:33 PM flipchartguy @Greggs_Science Maybe a balance of the 2? Sometimes we have blindspots and do need to be told, right? #guildchat
2:33 PM urbie #guildchat A4 Orgs? Outsourcing. Show of hands: Who’s lost a good job because it went to a contracting org?
2:33 PM SimonBlairTrain @Greggs_Science @eLearningGuild L&D = Learning & Development #GuildChat
2:34 PM willconstantine Q4) L&D will have trouble because of keeping up with the what they are learning and how to  track it. Enter xAPI #GuildChat
2:34 PM perrinia @ChadSLowry #guildchat we use lean ux on our interactions to ensure we achieve behavioural change. For health, this seems to resonate.
2:34 PM eLearningGuild Q5. What approaches, tools or technology has helped you be a more independent learner? #GuildChat
2:34 PM ChadSLowry @learningsnacks They shouldn’t be on their own; the org should provide a community for reflection on what they’ve learned. #guildchat
2:34 PM billbollenbach @SimonBlairTrain so true- a work culture environment of shared learning, application and value is key #GuildChat
2:35 PM Greggs_Science @flipchartguy I find they are not evaluating personal blindspots in their choices. It would be more valuable if Orgs did. #GuildChat
2:35 PM urbie #guildchat A4 Heard “Common where possible. Custom where it counts.” from an org somewhere. Cost & data drive decisions. Customize your PD.
2:35 PM urbie RT @eLearningGuild: Q5. What approaches, tools or technology has helped you be a more independent learner? #GuildChat
2:36 PM willconstantine @ChadSLowry let me know how it turns out! #GuildChat
2:36 PM SimonBlairTrain A5: That whole web thing, being able to see how other people solve similar problems. Working out loud, even if just with my team. #GuildChat
2:36 PM ChadSLowry Q5) Twitter certainly helps. Being part of an org like @eLearningGuild, too, with all of the resources they provide. #unsolicited #guildchat
2:36 PM JD_Dillon A5) Search, YouTube, Twitter, social anything … #GuildChat  https://t.co/2ZW1qPLLfB
2:36 PM urbie #guildchat A5 Two things.. #EdCamp (exposure to educators in K-12, academia) opened up more ways of knowing than I knew before.. and..
2:36 PM willconstantine @SimonBlairTrain @Greggs_Science @eLearningGuild I think he might have been joking… #GuildChat
2:37 PM willconstantine RT @eLearningGuild: Q5. What approaches, tools or technology has helped you be a more independent learner? #GuildChat
2:37 PM learningsnacks A5. The web, social networks, social apps. Mobile!! My always on smartphone. #GuildChat
2:37 PM perrinia a5 blogs. Books. I took @hjarche course on PKM. Now this stuff and meet ups.  #GuildChat
2:37 PM urbie A5 Chats like this #guildchat that help keep conversations going. Thing is, to get a conversation started you need to connect w/others.
2:37 PM LnDDave RT @eLearningGuild: Q5. What approaches, tools or technology has helped you be a more independent learner? #GuildChat
2:37 PM LearnovateSA RT @eLearningGuild: Today’s chat is scheduled to last one hour. We’ll post questions using #GuildChat; as a reminder be sure to use the has…
2:38 PM flipchartguy I think @JD_Dillon already mentioned blogging – such a helpful tool to reflect, engage with others and keep learning! #guildchat
2:38 PM JD_Dillon A5) Asking why and refusing to accept the “same old ways” #GuildChat
2:38 PM urbie #guildchat A5 2 years ago #EdCamp opened doors. Last year n this year going to #DevLearn & #mLearnCon kick-started relationships, chats.
2:38 PM DonaldClark A5 #guildchat books, Google, blogging, social media, conversations, travel
2:39 PM LnDDave A5) eye-opening moment was being downsized; it made me realize I learn for me, not my org. #GuildChat
2:39 PM JD_Dillon A5) HipChat helps my team avoid email, share ideas and experiences more quickly and openly #GuildChat
2:39 PM billbollenbach @ChadSLowry @learningsnacks yes! That is the bottom line! When we allowed open exploration and application, whole team benefitted #GuildChat
2:39 PM SimonBlairTrain @DonaldClark Travel? #GuildChat
2:39 PM JD_Dillon RT @LnDDave: A5) eye-opening moment was being downsized; it made me realize I learn for me, not my org. #GuildChat
2:39 PM perrinia @urbie #guildchat #conversationislearning. ;-)
2:40 PM DonaldClark A5 #guildchat Being a non-driver has given me years of extra learning time – honestly, I really am a m-learner http://t.co/1kRhUvFEn8
2:40 PM SimonBlairTrain @DonaldClark I hear that! Sometimes I (almost) miss my 3 hours of daily commute. #GuildChat
2:40 PM perrinia @SimonBlairTrain @DonaldClark #guildchat zomg travel is key. Culture is key. Difference and challenges and perspective is key.
2:41 PM eLearningGuild Q6. Has increased learning independence been more a revolutionary change or evolutionary? Why? #GuildChat
2:42 PM willconstantine RT @eLearningGuild: Q6. Has increased learning independence been more a revolutionary change or evolutionary? Why? #GuildChat
2:42 PM learningsnacks A5. Best of all is I feel learning is much more interesting with more chances like this to hear different ideas and experiences #GuildChat
2:42 PM JD_Dillon A6) Evolutionary – modern tech has accelerated what the printing press began #guildchat  https://t.co/9ih63Wai40
2:42 PM ChadSLowry Q6) Feels more evolutionary to me. Web, for instance, changed markedly but slowly from 1.0 to 2.0 to 3.0.  #guildchat
2:43 PM urbie RT @eLearningGuild: Q6. Has increased learning independence been more a revolutionary change or evolutionary? Why? #GuildChat
2:43 PM flipchartguy A6) Personally it’s been more evolutionary – I almost haven’t realized it’s how I’ve been learning more and more. #guildchat
2:43 PM urbie #guildchat A6 Depends.
2:43 PM willconstantine Q6) both. Evol because generations change therefore learning changes. Revol because we should become more responsible as people #GuildChat
2:43 PM billbollenbach A5. TED -Lrng Sol conf-Twitter to share & Pocket app to refer –   #GuildChat
2:43 PM learningsnacks A6. Yes, evolutionary. Totally agree with @JD_Dillon and @ChadSLowry #GuildChat
2:44 PM urbie #guildchat A6 What’d you do with it? Evolutionary if it’s learned then filed away. Application, in my eBook that’s revolution, leverage.
2:45 PM flipchartguy A6) Might be a revolutionary concept for some, but I think the only way it’s accepted & succeeds is evolutionary w/in orgs #guildchat
