TWIST Conversations: Andy Johnson & Aaron Silvers on Data, Analytics, and xAPI

Welcome to TWIST Conversations, where we chat with members of the Guild Community exploring current trends in learning, performance, and technology.

Picture1In this episode of TWIST Conversations I chat with Andy Johnson of ADL and Aaron Silvers of MakingBetter. We discuss the growing use of data and analytics in learning, and how the Experience API (xAPI) can open up new opportunities for learning and performance. Here are a few highlights from our conversation:

An API is a way for different applications [and] different systems to point data somewhere where, where it can either send data to it or get from it.

Now we have two different data sets, one before the training event and one after, or even alongside it, and we can start mapping the correlation between how are they learning and how are they performing.

xAPI reverses the course of learning design. [Learning Design has shifted from] an art forced into a computer science, [xAPI is] changing it back to an art again. Things that you design can all be tracked, and we don’t have to worry about the science getting in the way.

An additional role [that may] be added [to L&D] would be that of a data scientist, exploring how all of these statements that [we’re] tracking can be used within our organization.

If you have a speaker or topic that you would like to see featured in a future episode of TWIST Conversations, please let me know.
