#GuildChat for 01/22/21: When Tech ISN’T the Solution

At the Learning Guild we’re big fans of the numerous ways technology can make our lives more interesting and assist with how people learn. You’ve probably seen us talk about the newest gadgets we’re trying out, the apps that we use constantly, or even the game systems we play with regularly. So it’s safe to say we’re on board with the idea technology has real value to the work we all do as well as to our personal lives.

But just because you CAN use technology doesn’t always mean you SHOULD.

For instance, take this article recently shared (with more than a bit of side eye) by @DrJenMurphy about a wristband that tells your boss if you are unhappy. It’s a perfect example of what happens when you just throw technology at a problem for the sake of it rather than deal with the real issue at hand. And we see this misuse of technology more than we’d like in L&D, whether it’s a company buying the newest shiny tool with no plan for how to use it, trying to patch over a hard-to-solve problem with a more simplistic tech fix, using a tech-based solution when tech won’t actually help, or even just good tech implemented in the wrong place.
