#GuildChat for 05/12/17: The Past, Present, and Future of Instructional design

Our next #GuildChat takes place Friday, May 12th at 11AM PT/2PM ET. This week’s topic is The Past, Present, and Future of Instructional Design.

It seems not a year goes by where there aren’t at least a few well-shared articles and blog posts about the inevitable death of instructional design. And while reports of this field’s demise may seem greatly exaggerated, they do bring up two good points: the field of instruction design has absolutely changed over time and it’s smart to assume it will continue to shift and evolve in the future.

In this week’s #GuildChat we’ll be taking a look both backwards and forwards as we discuss what’s happening with the field of instructional design. This chat will give us a chance to share how we’ve seen the work of instructional design change throughout the time we’ve been in the industry and where this field’s pain points are today. We’ll then use that experience to help shape the conversation about where we see instructional design heading in the future and what we should do to prepare for where we’re going.

So join us for the discussion this Friday whether you see instructional design as a role that will continue to slowly shift over time, evolve into a new and more expanded place, or be completely replaced by AI and automation!

Prospective question:

Q1. What has changed in instructional design since you entered the L&D field?
Q2. Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to yourself when you started doing ID work?
Q3. What do you see as the biggest instructional design pain points right now?
Q4. What ID skills do you think are timeless – useful in the past, present, and future of this field?
Q5. What do you expect to be different about the way we do instructional design ten years from now?
Q6. What do you think are the biggest barriers to making future-focused ID choices?
Q7. What about the future of instructional design (or what ID could become) are you most excited about?
Q8. What are you doing to future-proof your instructional design skills?
