#GuildChat for 05/22/15: Learning in an Internet of Things World

Our next #GuildChat takes place Friday, May 22nd at 11am PT / 2pm ET. Our topic for this week’s chat is Learning in an Internet of Things World.

Advances in technology happen almost daily and now our technology is connecting to other technologies, advancing communication between interconnected machines that can inform, improve and adjust with little to no human intervention.2015-01-09_11-14-16 What does this mean for training? For performance support? For learning in general? As our machines are increasingly able to make decisions, take action, and self-correct what will that do to the learning industry and the various roles we have in it today?

In this week’s GuildChat we invite you to explore with us the fast approaching future of learning in a human and machine connected world. The Internet of Things (IoT) is here. Join us to discuss what is already happening, what’s to come, the impact, the opportunities and the challenges.

Here are the questions currently scheduled to be posted during the chat.

Q1) How would you define the “Internet of Things”? Why is this such an important topic? #GuildChat

Q2) What examples of the Internet of Things have you already seen implemented? #GuildChat

Q3) How does the Internet of Things enhance the way we live our daily lives? #GuildChat

Q4) How does an Internet of Things world impact learning? #GuildChat

Q5) What common performance problems could the Internet of Things eliminate? #GuildChat

Q6) How might organizational learning, and the role of those working in L&D, be changed by the Internet of Things? #GuildChat

Q7) What do you think the next step is beyond the Internet of Things? #GuildChat

2:06 PM LnDDave RT @eLearningGuild: Q1) How would you define the “Internet of Things”? Why is this such an important topic? #GuildChat
2:06 PM opurt11 Q1) IoT (aka Semantic Web) is a way for sites to use algorithms to serve up predictive content. #guildchat
2:07 PM learndrops A1: IoT: Ability for simple objects (things) to provide dynamic connected guidance & feedback. #GuildChat https://t.co/UiuUZkFYrP
2:07 PM Quinnovator a1) physical objects embedded with network connectivity #guildchat
2:07 PM JD_Dillon A1) Connectivity between devices and resulting shared network of info and people #GuildChat http://t.co/H0gKU6PfrV https://t.co/lnYPLRPMC0
2:07 PM opurt11 Q1) Important mainly b/c it changes the way we interact with computers (and soon enough, the way they interact with us). #guildchat
2:07 PM kellybrannock Hi everyone! I’m Kelly, librarian & trainer-type from Raleigh. Hope to follow this discussion today – very interested in IoT! #GuildChat
2:07 PM britz A1. #IoT is the expansion of connections/communication btwn all things living & non-living.  Admittedly sounds a bit creepy tho #guildchat
2:07 PM LnDDave A1) Internet of Things refers to the normalcy of smart devices being connected to the Internet.   #GuildChat
2:08 PM Quinnovator a1) ‘things’ (physical objects) that are connected to the internet: sensors, hardware, and software #guildchat
2:08 PM OhThatRachel A1) Objects that are able to connect online or with something somehow & can share information electronically #GuildChat
2:08 PM technkl Was Internet of Stuff already taken? iOS? haha #guildchat
2:08 PM JD_Dillon A1) Tremendous value to be gained (and potential risk) in a highly-connected world enabled by tech #guildchat
2:09 PM opurt11 A1) @LnDDave It’s much more than that, though, isn’t it? I can experience the IoT on a connected laptop alone, yes? #guildchat
2:09 PM LnDDave RT @Quinnovator: a1) physical objects embedded with network connectivity #guildchat
2:09 PM gailfus A1) Connectedness, smaller world/larger opportunities, being mindful that learning could become very impersonal if not careful. #GuildChat

2:10 PM opurt11 A1) @gailfus I think the clear and present danger is that the IoT could make learning *very* personal, if we’re not careful. #guildchat
2:10 PM JD_Dillon A1) Data, relationships, correlation, cause/effect, improved performance, predictive support #guildchat
2:10 PM technkl @opurt11 @LnDDave not without other devices connected to it, it’s the whole of all things. Laptop is small piece though #guildchat
2:10 PM kellybrannock Q1) Connectivity btwn things + people; new ways of gathering formative info, feedback, new source for needs assessment, etc. #guildchat
2:10 PM JD_Dillon A1) Knowing and iterating #guildchat
2:10 PM Quinnovator a1) things that are ‘smart’ not just in and of themselves, but through connections #guildchat
2:10 PM learndrops RT @opurt11: A1) @gailfus I think the clear and present danger is that the IoT could make learning *very* personal, if we’re not careful. #…
2:10 PM gailfus @opurt11 The flip side…#GuildChat
2:10 PM technkl @opurt11 @gailfus wy do we need to be careful? Isn’t personal good? #guildchat
2:10 PM britz @opurt11 @gailfus Tell me more Chad. #guildchat
2:11 PM opurt11 A1) @technkl @LnDDave Not sure. Semantic techniques apply even if I have just one device. But I might not get full experience. #guildchat
2:11 PM Minreeva A1) The dichotomy of the “real” & “virtual” Makes sure that what exists in the “real” world is also reflected on the “virtual” #guildchat
2:11 PM JD_Dillon RT @Quinnovator: a1) things that are ‘smart’ not just in and of themselves, but through connections #guildchat

2:18 PM technkl @opurt11 @gailfus still not seeing that as too personal though unless it’s used to harm me in some way #guildchat
2:18 PM opurt11 @technkl @learndrops @gailfus True, this could be more of a future state issue, but one we should be paying attention to now.  #guildchat

2:23 PM LnDDave A3) the ability for smartphones to be a control center for all the machines and technologies of our life.  #GuildChat
2:23 PM technkl @gailfus @britz we always find ways to fill time though, not the objects making us more busy, it’s internal #guildchat
2:23 PM opurt11 @technkl @gailfus That’s our experience today. Soon, we’ll see computers that seemingly never miss on predictions. #guildchat

2:25 PM technkl @opurt11 @gailfus that would be pretty cool though if it alreayd knew what you wanted, do’nt have to think about it #guildchat
2:25 PM Quinnovator @JD_Dillon maybe a shift in what we have to think about, more to the things we *want* to? #guildchat

2:25 PM gailfus @JD_Dillon I find I have to think A LOT more/in very different ways. Not a bad thing, but it can be exhausting trying to keep up. #GuildChat
2:25 PM opurt11 @MelMilloway Hi Melissa! #guildchat
2:26 PM technkl @kellybrannock @opurt11 @gailfus I fail to see why that’s scary, it’s still computer algorithms, nobody cares that much about me #guildchat

2:27 PM Quinnovator a4) things can know what we know and don’t, do their best to improve us #guildchat
2:27 PM opurt11 @technkl @gailfus I’d love to see percentages on people seeing this as “cool” vs. “creepy.” Age group breakdown, too. #guildchat
2:27 PM OhThatRachel A4) We will be able to see training results through actual data, easier to track and collect #GuildChat
2:27 PM gailfus A4) Gives us new resources, a broader knowledge base. Learners start off farther along the timeline, potentially. #GuildChat

2:28 PM gailfus @technkl @kellybrannock @opurt11 I think you’re wrong there, Nick. You are a consumer. Someone cares VERY much. #GuildChat
2:28 PM kellybrannock @Quinnovator @JD_Dillon Yes-IoT gives me a way 2 focus attention on things I want, things I couldn’t monitor as easily on my own. #guildchat
2:28 PM JD_Dillon A4) Make it less about learning and more about doing #guildchat
2:28 PM TrainingDailyAv RT @OhThatRachel: A4) We will be able to see training results through actual data, easier to track and collect #GuildChat

2:28 PM LnDDave RT @Quinnovator: a4) devices could, for instance, help us understand more about them or how they relate to other things #guildchat

2:28 PM learndrops Also possible tools let you slice & dice data also = more opportunity for analysis. @opurt11 @JD_Dillon #GuildChat https://t.co/RwLoAlpNbL
2:29 PM britz A4. Machines will take care of themselves/ take care of other machines, learning how to do this will not be a human’s job #guildchat
