#GuildChat for 4/12/19: Learning from Other Industries

Our next #GuildChat takes place Friday, April 12th at 11am PT / 2pm ET. Our topic for this week’s chat is Learning from Other Industries.

Once again we tapped the community for this week’s chat topic. Big thanks to Nick Floro, Jennifer Murphy and Megan Torrance for surfacing this idea!

Everyday, inside and outside of our own organizations we learn of what others are doing. It could be the accounting department implementing a new ledger system within your own walls or the bottled water industry’s efforts at reducing plastic use and communicating its efforts – we see and we absorb and in some cases we put these ideas, or at least the principles within, into our own work.

Join us this week on #GuildChat as we discuss where we in L&D are leaning in, which industries or internal departments are presenting rich ideas and how do we best incorporate them into our own practices.

Prospective questions:

Q1 What industries do you find the best ideas from (other than your own)? Why?
Q2 What’s the most unusual or surprising industry you’ve pulled important inspiration from?
Q3 How do you go about translating insights from another industry to ours?
Q4 Where can people or organizations sometimes go wrong when looking to use techniques or insights from other fields in new ways?
Q5 How do you convince your co-workers or stakeholders that a “foreign” idea is good. What are the typical resistance points?
Q6 What are the dangers of staying head down in L&D and not looking at what other industries are doing?
Q7 How can we be more attuned to ideas outside our own space?
Q8 What are some insights/techniques/ideas you think other industries should consider borrowing from L&D?
