We’re just coming from a conference (DevLearn), it’s time for us to return to work and there’s this inevitable moment of “now what?”. So much seems up in the air, undone or yet to get started. It can be paralyzing. In addition to small pauses, like 3-4 days away at an event, some have even longer stretches too such as vacations or maybe even a sabbatical and some maybe not as long but a definitely a deeper restart – when we begin at a new company.

In this week’s GuildChat we take a look at how to navigate the restart moments in our careers. What are the best ways to begin again? Are there tried and true patterns or even advanced preparation to make the transition more successful?

Join us this week as we hit restart and learn from each other the best ways to get going after a short or long pause in our work.

Prospective questions:

Q1. What is the hardest part of restarting either after a short or long pause in working? Why?
Q2.  How about a conference? It’s easy to leave with a lot of energy/ideas, only to have it fizzle out after you get home. When you’re restarting back at work, how can you keep that new energy going?
Q3. Needing to pivot and restart something you’ve already put a lot of effort into can feel disappointing. What can tell you you should restart it anyway?
Q4. What signs do you look out for to tell you you may need to restart something – be it a new approach, new focus, new role, new company, or even a new career?
Q5. Sometimes a restart is a career change. What are the biggest hurdles to overcome when making a career shift?
Q6. What are the first things you look to do when starting with a new company?
Q7. Restarting can sometimes feel like failure or it can feel like rebirth. What can help it be a more positive experience?
Q8. When have you needed to do a major restart on something in your life? What did you learn from that?
