#GuildChat for 05/26/17: Overcoming a Bad L&D Reputation

Our next #GuildChat takes place Friday, May 26th at 11AM PT/2PM ET. This week’s topic is Overcoming a Bad L&D Reputation

A reputation can be either good; helpful, impactful, effective, efficient, timely or it can be bad; slow, ineffective, time-wasting, boring, outdated. And fortunately or unfortunately the reputation your L&D department or role may have has nothing to do with your work, but it is due to previous experiences the learners or decision-makers have had in other situations or organizations.

When you make a solution suggestion and eyes roll back or faces of stakeholders down turn, you know you are dealing with a reputation barrier. What is your next move? Should you take it head on or are you going to be expelling and possibly wasting energy in trying to convince vs. working on the solution to the problem.

In this week’s GuildChat we look at the issue of reputations in L&D, why they exist, why they persist and how we can go about strategically combating and reversing them.  Join us to share your experiences and learn from others on how we can help improve a bad rep!

Prospective question:

Q1. What causes L&D content/actions to get a bad reputation with our audiences or stakeholders?
Q2. Have you ever experienced people not wanting to engage with your content because of past bad experiences? What happened?
Q3. How do you deal with the frustration of people’s past experiences with poor L&D content and methods?
Q4. How much is L&D actually responsible for the bad reputation our content/actions sometimes has? Explain.
Q5. Have you ever had to change the tool or approach you were going to use for content because of audience bias against it?
Q6. Are there any approaches and/or mediums that have been so poorly used where you work that you now avoid them?
Q7. What are some short-term ideas on how you can quickly begin to change people’s opinion of L&D content/approaches?
Q8. What are things we could be doing to help the organizational learning field as a whole have a better image?
