David Kelly’s Curated Content for the Week of 3/13/17

kelly_davidI read through a number of articles and blog posts each day, and every Monday I curate a few of my favorites for members of the eLearning Guild Community, and for the learning and performance field as a whole. Each shared resource includes a brief introduction explaining why I find the link to be of value and recommend you read it.

Here’s the content for this week:

11 Best TED Talks About Company Learning by Stefan Sarbu
I share this post for two reasons. First, I admittedly love TED Talks, and this post features 11 great ones. More importantly, I share this post as an example of curation being used in a learning context. Of all the TED Talks out there, the author has curated a list specifically with the corporate learning market in mind.

Compliance Training: Cheers or Jeers? by Bob Mosher
Compliance training is a phrase that can bring dread to learning professionals and learners alike. It’s been deemed a necessary evil by many, but does it have to be that way? In this article, Bob Mosher examines the current culture of compliance training, and challenges us to embrace the technologies that enable us to truly support the spirit of what compliance training is supposed to achieve.

The Persuasive Power of Analogy by Brian Clark
Analogies, used well, can be a great tool for learning and understanding. This tool unpacks the power of analogies, sharing a few powerful examples of them being used to help people understand an idea. While the post is written with content marketing in mind, the lessons it contains are easily transferable to learning and education as well.

Learning Experience Design: An Overview and 11 of the Best Resources by Karla Gutierrez
Learning Experience Design is a phrase that has gained prominence in recent years. This post is an excellent resource for those looking to explore the topic, as it provides a concise definition and description of what Learning Experience Design is, and then shares 11 different resources that allow you to dig deeper into the topic.
I also very much like the way the author has curated the resources here, providing not only a link, but a brief description as to why the link was added to the list.

Researchers Identify a New Cognitive Bias by Robby Berman
Our personal biases can drastically affect our ability to learn something new. Understanding cognitive bias is critical not only to remain open related to our personal learning, but also to properly build learning programs for those we support. This post provides great concise explanations of common cognitive biases, plus it explores a new potential cognitive bias that has emerged from recent research.

3 Museum Design Principles to Help Your Content Marketing by Noelle Chorney
Museums are a great source of learning. While that is true from a direct context – that you can learn a lot from a museum visit – it’s also true from a number of indirect contexts as well. As learning professionals, there’s a great deal we can learn about from how museums are designed. This post explores that from a marketing perspective, but the lessons explored apply to the work of learning and performance professionals as well.
