#GuildChat for 12/02/16: Lies In Learning

Our next #GuildChat takes place Friday, December 2nd at 11AM PT/2PM ET. This week’s topic is Lies in Learning

The hot word of the day is “Post-Truth.” Some have used this term to describe the political and social climate of our times; filled with lies, propaganda and emotion over logic. This week GuildChat stretches this a idea a bit to look at lies in learning. For the sake of our discussion we will lump in there half-truths, misconceptions and exaggerations that happen in and around our field. Why do they persist? What is the emotional attachment to certain misconceptions? How has the learning community used and misused these and what can we do about it?

Join us this week for a spirited discussion about those misinformed ideas and opinions that pervade our work but also how small (white) lies can possibly be beneficial.

Prospective question:

Q1. Have you ever believed in a learning concept or idea only to change your feelings about it later? What changed your mind? #guildchat
Q2. What topics today do you hear people in L&D talk about with certainty that you think aren’t necessarily so cut and dry? #guildchat
Q3. Why do you think some of the misconceptions (and even lies) about learning continue to be spread even after they’ve been debunked? #guildchat
Q4. When someone promotes an untruth, how do you address it? Or do you? #guildchat
Q5. What are some types of white lies used in learning initiatives? #guildchat
Q6. Are there ever times in your work where telling a partial truth or white lie is the right thing to do? #guildchat
Q7. Statistics don’t lie, statisticians do. What does this saying teach us about using data? #guildchat
Q8. How do you personally go about checking facts and concepts before sharing them with others? #guildchat
