#GuildChat for 11/6/15: Training vs. Learning

Our next #GuildChat takes place Friday, November 6 at 11am PT / 2pm ET. Our topic for this week’s chat is Training vs. Learning.

For many the terms are identical; training is learning, learning is training. From our school days, an environment where we passively sat and were provided information, the idea of a teacher, a curriculum and a classroom has been synonymous with learning. Although learning CAN take place in an organizational training environment, training does not always lead to learning and learning certainly happens outside of formal events.  2015-01-09_11-14-16

What then is learning and how is it unique from the vehicle of training? What are the advantages of a training settings to improve performance and when is more informal or social learning appropriate. Can we increase learning in our institutions and organizations without threatening the training function?
